Fueling Young Minds: Plant-based Power for Urban School Kids

NAIROBI, KENYA – In a significant move towards healthier eating habits for East African youth, Virginia Ruguru, affectionately known as "Aunty Vee" and team lead of Torch Initiatives, presented a compelling talk on plant-based diets to over 400 studentson Saturday, June 14, 2025.

The students, many of whom are accustomed to processed foods and fast-food snacks, were participants in the Jumuiya ya Mashariki Africa open chess tournament. Aunty Vee emphasized the immense benefits of incorporating plant-based options into both school menus and home meals, particularly for urban and town school-goers.

She challenged the misconception that plant-based eating is a sign of poverty, instead proclaiming it a "sign of good and healthy living for all humans, animals, and the planet earth.
